“Apple of His Eye”: But What Does It Mean to You?

Apples are an all-American success story-each ...

We have all heard ” the apple of His eye” but do we understand or can we explain what these words say?  I was sent a postcard including these words, stating that I was ” the apple of His eye”.  I appreciated the sentiment but questioned the relevancy to me.

In Hebrew, the language of the Tanakh or Old Covenant, there are four words for “apple”.  The first is The little man of the eye or the pupil or middle of the eye or “iy-shown“, from ” iysh” , a man a mortal, from ‘anash, to be frail, feeble, desparate, sick, or woeful.  We are the frail little man or middle of YHWH’s eye.  After all, He does see all!  YHWH is the all seeing El Roi, the GOD who sees and cares for us!

He found him in a desert land , and in the wasted, howling wilderness; He led him about, He instructed him, He kept him as the apple of His eye. ( Deuteronomy 32, Moshe’s Song, v. 10)

Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me under the shadow of Your wings, from the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who surround me. ( Psalm 17: 8-9)

Keep My mitzvoth, and live; and My Torah as the apple of your eye. ( Proverbs 7:2)

The second Hebrew word for apple is tappuwach,  apple fragrance of the fruit or tree of pome for quince, orange or pomegranate; from “naphach” to puff, inflate, blow or scatter.  Beth Tappuah , House of Apple, was a city in Judah ( Joshua 12:17, 15: 34).  Tappuah was also a city in Ephraim ( Joshua 16:8, 17:8) on the border of Menashsheh.  We in Yeshua are to be the fragrance of YHWH, and scatter His seed or word.  The pomegranate is packed with seeds and must be pressed to release its juice!

As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my Beloved among the sons.  I sat down under His shadow with great delight, and His fruit was sweet to my taste. ( Song of Songs 2:3)

Who is this that comes up from the wilderness, leaning upon her Beloved?  I raised you up under the apple tree:  there your mother brought you forth: there she brought you forth that bore you. ( Song of Songs 8:5)

The vine is dried up, and the fig tree droops; the pomegranate tree, the palm tree also, and the apple tree, even all the trees of the field, are withered:  because joy is withered away from the sons of men. (Joel 1:12)

The third Hebrew word is bath or bat, for daughter, symbolically used as a term of endearment  in  “apple” of the eye of YHWH, refering to ” the daughter of Zion” .

Their heart cried to YHWH, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give yourself no rest; let not the apple of Your eye cease. (Lamentations 2:18)

The fourth Hebrew word for apple  is babah, ” hollow out (as a gate);i.e. pupil of the eye: – apple”, # 892 Strong’s Concordance.   Through the pupil enters light which radiates the image on our retina, which our brain translates.  Yeshua said our eye is the lamp of the body, ” therefore when your eye is single, your whole body also is full of light”, not darkness . ( Luke 11: 34-36).

For this says YHWH tzevaoth; Due to His glory has He sent Me to the nations who plundered you: for he that touches you touches the apple of My eye. (Zechariah 2:8)

May we forever remain the apple of His eye.  May the light of the knowledge of YHWH shine in our heart and body.

For I Myself am to her, says YHWH, a wall of fire all round, and will be the glory in the midst of her. (Zechariah 2:5)
