” But they would not listen, but hardened their necks, like the necks of their ahvot (fathers), that did not believe in YHWH their Elohim…they rejected His commands, and His covenant… and His testimonies; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were all around them…and served Ba’al.  And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of YHWH, to provoke Him to anger…Therefore YHWH was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of His sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only. “(2 Kings 17:14-18)

The kingdom of Israel  split in two, with the 10 tribes comprising Israel, in the north, [north can be symbolic of gloom and darkness, without the word of YHWH], “…carried away, in exile, to Ashshur, until this day.” (v.23) The two tribes of Judah,  Benjamin (Benyamin=right hand covenant son) and Judah(Yahudah=worshipper of Yah) stayed to the south, [south is yamin, to the right of East, and the warm winds of rain].

Evil kings  and no so evil kings, served since Solomon.  Judah’s King Achaz  in Jerusalem “did what was right in the sight of YHWH”,  yet he made his own son pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen.  Achaz even sacrificed and burned incense in a temple of idols, and sent messengers to Israel’s enemy, Ashshur, requesting help against Aram.  Achaz saw an altar in Damascus, and had Uriah the priest sketch it and build it.  Then Achaz himself burned his offerings and sprinkled the blood upon the “great” altar, and ordered Uriah to use it ,too, without regard to YHWH’s set-apart instructions .  (Leviticus, chapters 8 & 16 specify YHWH’s commands: only the kohens, the priests of Levites, were to perform these sacred and holy rites, on the bronze altar, in front of the Temple.) (2 Kings 16: 2-15)

Achaz removed the bronze sacrificing altar from the front of the Temple, and moved it to the north (dark, gloomy) side, for him to personally inquire by (occult practice).  He also had cut off the bases of the holy lavers or wash basins for purification, and made a sun worship dial out of the molten brass.  (2Kings 16: 14-17). ( Achaz is directly disregarding instructions YHWH gave Moshe and is flagrantly disobedient to His Torah or laws. )

( Are not we also disobedient in following the commands of YHWH?  And what are these commands, but to love YHWH with all our heart, soul and mind, and to love our neighbor.  But even with these two, we break our Father’s heart!)

In the 12th year of Achaz of Judah, Hoshea reigned as king of the northern kingdom, Israel, and did what was evil in the sight of YHWH. In his 9th year, Hoshea’s kingdom was attacked and the people of 10 tribes were carried off in captivity to Ashshur.  Verses 7-12 of 2Kings 17 list the so- called secret sins of the children of Israel done against YHWH: built temples to worship idols, obeyed laws of the idol gods, set up images and poles of pagan gods, burned incense to them, and worked wicked things (witchcraft?).  (Today we have an increase in new age religions, and even unknowingly practice strange fire before Him, such as in Kabbalah or yoga.)

Hizqiyahu (Hezekiah), age 25, began to co-reign over Judah with his father Achaz , in Hoshea’s 3rd year.  Hizqiyahu ” did what was right in the sight of YHWH”.  He removed the idol temples (of his  father?), and broke the images, and cut down the pagan poles.  “He trusted in YHWH Elohim of Israel; so that after him there was none like him among all the kings of Judah”. (2 Kings 18:5) He clung to YHWH, kept His commandments, and YHWH was with him, and prospered him.

However, in Hizqiyahu’s 6th year of reign, Shalmaneser king of Ashshur took Judah’s neighbor ( and brother) Israel. Then in the 14th year, Sancheriv now king of Ashshur came against all the “fortified” cities of Judah and took them! ( Has sin now entered the heart of the king of Judah?) ( 7  the number can be symbolic of perfection; 6, grace; & 5, man)!

Rather than repent and seek the forgiveness of  YHWH , Hizqiyahu  ( “strengthened by YAH” !) requests the king of Ashshur to “forgive” and sends penance in the form of 300 talents of silver and 30 of gold, all stripped from the doors and treasures of the temple of YHWH!  The king of Ashshur responds by sending 3 messengers ( not angels!) and “greatarmies against Yahrushalayim ( “Jerusalem” [no J’s in Hebrew!]) [ means “founded peaceful”, from yara, to flow as water or rain,  to teach & shalom , peace). ( Prophetically, in Zechariah and Ezekiel, water or peace will flow as a river from the temple on Mt. Zion, in Yahrushalayim!)

When these great armies came up, as one always goes up to Yahrushalayim, they came and stood by the conduit or channel of the upper pool, which is in the highway of the Launderer’s Field.  (v.17)  This is known also as fuller’s or bleacher’s field, used to cleanse and bleach white the virgin cloth and then color it blue, scarlet or purple!Cleansing was done by trampling and then soaking in vats or pools of bleaching or dying agents.

These launderers fields were located on the northeast side of the city, ‘north’ for darkness, and ‘east’ for eternity:

Wash yourselves clean! Get your evil deeds out of my sight!…learn to do good!…

‘Come now’, says Adonai, ‘let’s talk this over together. Even if your sins are like scarlet, they will be white as snow; even if they are red as crimson, they will be like wool. If you are obedient, you will eat the good of the land…[ Isaiah 1:16-19]”!

“I will cleanse your impurities as with lye [bleach] and remove all your alloyed base metal [dross or impurities] (v. 25)”!

When Hizqiyahu heard the words of the king of Ashshur, against YHWH, he repented, tore his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the Bayit (House) of YHWH. ( 2Kings 19: 1) Yeshayahu (Isaiah) was sent to him and prophesied to not fear the enemy who blasphemed YHWH for he shall return to his own land.  Sure enough, Hizqiyahu then trusted YHWH and sought Him in prayer and praise, v. 15-34.  ” And it came to pass that night; that the heavenly Malach (Angel) of YHWH went out, and killed in the camp of the Ashurim 185,000: and when they arose early in the morning, see, they were all dead corpses.” (v.35)

So, Sancheriv melech of Ashshur departed, and dwelt at Ninveh ( YHWH did not detroy all the enemy, but would allow them to return ; however, while Sancheriv was worshipping idols in a pagan temple, his sons killed him with the sword, and escaped to Armenia.  Armenians to this day live in and occupy a quarter in old  Yahrushalayim ). Hizqiyahu was sick, near death, but through prayer and supplication  to YHWH, he lived another 15 years!

How does the launderer’s fields relate to the Feast of Tabernacles or  Hag Sukkot?  The feast is a time of reflection and subsequent joy over the provision of YHWH during our wilderness times.  Included in the celebrations is the priestly procession down to the Pool of Siloam (Shiloach, from shalach, to send away) for the water ceremony  (page 80, Christ in the Tabernacles by David Brickner). The priests would dip the golden pitcher into the pool, and as they proceeded back to the Temple, would sing, ” With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation( Yeshua) [Isaiah 12:3].”  Water then was poured into the laver, and as the priest washed his hands, symbolic for purification, the Levites recited, ” Save now I beseech You, O YHWH, O YHWH, I beseech You, send now prosperity.” (Psalm 118:25)

” Elohim, in your grace, have mercy on me; in Your great compassion, blot out my crimes. Wash me completely from my guilt, and cleanse me from my sin.

Sprinkle me with hyssop [with the blood of the Lamb, Exodus 12; blood of atonement, Leviticus], and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.

Create in me a clean heart, Elohim; renew in me a resolute spirit.

Restore my joy in Your Salvation [Yeshua], and let a willing spirit uphold me [Psalms 51: 1,2, 9, 12, 14]!”

  1. Something I have wondered about that perhaps you could shed some light on…quite simply, why do some Christian people observe the high holy days or feasts of the Jewish people? I mean no disrespect and am sincerely curious.
